MARK GELFAND
Mr. Gelfand has over 20 years of experience developing medical devices in academic, startup and corporate environments. Specifically, his expertise is in integrative physiology, systems integration, regulatory aspects of design and biomedical engineering.
As Senior Research Engineer in the Division of Cardiology at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine from 1987 to 1992, Mr. Gelfand was responsible for the development of several concept-level medical devices. As co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of CardioLogic Systems Inc., Mr. Gelfand was responsible for the development of the Vest CPR device designed to treat cardiac arrest. The successor to that device is now marketed as AutoPulse® by Zoll Medical.
With Dr. Levin, he co-founded CHF Solutions, Ardian and Cardiac Concepts and served as the Chief Technology Officer to those ventures. Mr. Gelfand also worked at Nellcor Puritan Bennett Inc. – the world’s leading respiratory device company – where he was responsible for the architecture development of a new ICU ventilator platform.
Mr. Gelfand is an author and co-author of more than 50 issued U.S. patents in the fields of heart failure, resuscitation, sleep apnea and dialysis. He holds master’s degrees in electrical and controls engineering from St. Petersburg Institute of Technology and received graduate-level training in physiology at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
HOWARD R. LEVIN, M.D.
Dr. Levin is a cardiologist and an expert in the care of patients with heart failure, heart transplantation, mechanical cardiac assistance and intensive care. He has also worked extensively towards the integration of cardiac, respiratory and renal physiological into novel therapeutic solutions for clinical practice.
Instrumental in the clinical trials and regulatory approval of the Thermo CardioSystems, Inc. HeartMate® LVAD and other devices, Dr. Levin is author of 44 issued U.S. patents. His inventions and co-inventions started Nephros, CardioTechnologies, Evalve, CHF Solutions, Ardian and Cardiac Concepts.
Prior to joining Coridea, Dr. Levin was a co-founder of the venture-funded medical device startup Cardio Technologies Inc. There he served as the Chief Scientific Officer and Vice President of R & D. More recently, he was the co-founder, President and Chief Scientific Officer of CHF Solutions and the co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of Cardiac Concepts, Inc. Dr. Levin received his M.D. from the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine and his training in cardiology at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Levin has graduate-level training in both cardiovascular physiology and biomedical engineering including a master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering.
He is the author on over 100 medical and scientific publications.
